Welcome To The Guardian Civic League

Since it's inception by founder and First President Alphonso Deal, the League has spoken out on many important matters that affect the lives of all Philadelphians; such as unfair treatment towards minority citizens by Police, the lack of services in minority communities, unfair treatment towards minority police officers and the low hiring rate and promotions of minority officers.

Today, the League is still speaking out for justice and fairness for minorities in the police department. The GCL won a battle for the misuse of computers and the Internet to spread racial remarks and discrimination by non Afro-American officers. The stop and frisk law in minority communities is another GCL undertaking. The GCL has voiced objections and concerns over the 60 college credits for employment as a police officer to the Police Commissioner, City Council and the Mayor.

The GCL has developed and implemented various programs throughout the city to enhance the quality of life for al Philadelphians. To form a better relationship and understanding between the community and the police department, and a less racially charged work environment within the department for its officers.

Today In History

  • In 1950- U.S. Supreme Court undermined the legal foundations of segregation in three landmark cases, Sweatt v. Painter, McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents and Henderson v. United States.
  • In 1966- The “March Against Fear” began on June 5, 1966, and was initiated by civil rights activist James Meredith.

To Inspire You

  • If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for their prescription, who has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer - even if it's not my grandparent. If there's an Arab-American or Mexican-American family being rounded up by John Ashcroft without benefit of an attorney or due process, I know that that threatens my civil liberties. And I don't have to be a woman to be concerned that the Supreme Court is trying to take away a woman's right, because I know that my rights are next. It is that fundamental belief - I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper - that makes this country work.
