  • In 1960- Somali proclaimed independent.
  • In 1964- On July 1, 1964, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) deemed the collective bargaining contract between the Hughes company and the Independent Metal Workers Union to be illegal under the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act.
  • In 1976- Kenneth Gibson, mayor of Newark, became the first Black president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
  • In 2009- Ursula Burns becomes first African American Female to be named President and Chief Executive Officer of a Fortune 500 company, Xerox Corp
